My Artist Statement
The book Brave New World was about people who saw more in life than what was given to them and they pursued it. They found out who they really were and they went after it. They showed the society that what they are doing isn’t living. They are taking soma, a drug that helps you stay happy and have no real emotions so that when you have a problem you don’t react in a negative way, instead of having a true emotion and really feeling. This is supposed to be an utopia, but you can’t feel the happiness you should when you are living in a happy society. I think that they showed something to the people today that aren’t as extremely conditioned, but still are conditioned. Do we face our problems or do we just drink soma, find ways to escape the problems and fears that we need to face?
The choice of flow, image, moment, frame, and word were important in making this graphic novel because these are the guidelines on how to created a great graphic novel. The choice of moment definition is choosing how many moments and which moments to portray in a scene. This helps you think what moments are important in the story I want to tell and what I want to show or portray, in them. The choice of frame means choosing the angle and distance to portray a moment. This helps you to decide how you want to draw the picture and how it will look to the audience. The choice of image definition is what images you will show in the panel and style you will use. The choice of word means choosing what type of type of words to use (is any) and what the text will say. Choice of flow means choosing the order and direction of the panels across the page so that the reader can follow the story easily. It can also mean manipulating the narrative of the story in order to make the story more interesting or understandable to the reader.
This graphic novel was about the character in Brave New World named John. He wanted to show the people of Brave New World what true emotion was and how it felt, instead of just drinking soma to fix all their problems. At the start of the novel you see John making an arrow and a bow. You see music notes that represent him singing to himself. He is enjoying himself, but then you see him whipping himself. He is punishing himself for enjoying himself. Throughout the novel you see John punishing himself and hurting others to try and show them that you can achieve true emotion. Then the people feed off of it, they see him as some kind of movie or funny show. They start to watch him and bug him about many things like asking him why he is whipping himself and why he isn’t just drinking soma. Soon enough John can’t take it anymore and he hangs himself to show the people his pain but also to represent that emotions can take over your life and they can be a great thing to show others.

My Poster and Panels
My Artist Assessment
While drawing this graphic novel I had a hard time picturing some of the images. Normally I can picture the images I need or want to draw. In this project I had to draw a man whipping himself and I had a hard time picturing that in my head. I had to look up some images on google and that helped get an idea in my head and I could run with it. I also had to do this with the the drawing of the guy setting up the cameras in the forest. Normally when I have trouble drawing I will look up the pose on google to get many ideas and many different interpretations on the poses or drawings. Sometimes I will ask someone I know to do the pose if it isn’t a dramatic pose. I overcame this difficulty by looking up the poses and then it became very easy for me to draw it.
I really like the last panel in my graphic novel, it is the picture of john hanging himself and a reporter walks in and sees him. I like this just because there are no words you can just see the pain that he was in. You can just see the pain in the silhouette, the hurt that he was feeling and the dejection that he felt. I made this panel by just having a silhouette of a body hanging from the ceiling, and you can see the back of the reporter’s head. I also like how in the book they talk about how he wanted to show the people of Brave New World what true emotion felt like, not soma. I love that so much!
Overall in the whole project I think I am most proud of the fact that I drew a graphic novel. I have never drawn something like that. Normally I just draw one picture that is the whole school, or most of the page. I sketch and draw on one page and it makes up a story with one picture, not different panels making up the story. I learned that when making a comic the gutters are actually very important. I used to think that they were just to show that it is a comic and take up space so you don’t have to draw as much. Now I know that it does signify that you are drawing a comic but it also helps to draw attention to certain places, as in if you decide to go into the gutter you are going to have more graphic weight, and if you use brighter colors you will also put more graphic weight on that one panel. I learned this throughout this project and drawing the graphic novel. In conclusion, I have learned many things that I didn’t know about graphic novels. I also learned some things about how I draw as a person and my drawing type. I learned that depending on how many colors or how little colors you use you can make the picture the emphasis of the page. I learned that I am a visual person. I like to be able to see what I want to draw, so I can draw it the exact way that I want. These are some things that this project has taught me, and I have learned on my own about myself and different drawing skills.
