College Essay Project
In this project we were able to work on college essay and really refine them to be confident in at least one essay we were using for college applications. One skill I grew in through this project was showing not telling, and sticking within my limits. At the beginning of the project I wasn't giving people an experience when they were reading my essay I was just telling what was going on and by my final draft I was able to show and give an experience for the reader. I also was struggling with the word limit, which was 650 words, and needed a lot of help cutting down and refining what was relevant and useful for me to say.
One way I was telling before was when I said "The hospital room was familiar to me as I was ready for my procedure." This is now how this sentence changed and improved with me show through my writing "The sterile hospital smell is all too familiar and when I open my eyes I’m blinded by a bright white light coming from the ceiling."
The feed back I received to help me revise this was from my little critique group. They all said that they really liked my story and that it was a good start but they needed more showing and less of me just saying what was happening, it became boring for them to ready because of this. So I then flashed back to sophomore year where my writing teacher told us when we are writing to think about our senses and how this affected our story. I used this in my writing and have now created an essay I am confident with.
